My Search For Linen Sheets
I’ve been dreaming of owning linen sheets for a couple of years now! I’ve spent countless hours researching (as I always do with most purchases these days..!) to see what was out there, and also what different brands had to offer. Linen is becoming increasingly popular, which is very exciting as it’s one of the most eco-friendly materials out there!
It comes from Flax!
Linen is made from the Flax plant… yes yes those same little seeds you put in your smoothie every morning! Flax is one of the most easy-going and resilient plants out there, it can grow in very harsh conditions, with poor soil, which means it uses very little water, far less than cotton for example! It also has very few enemies which means it doesn’t need pesticides. (but processing it is very time consuming, hence the steep price)
Flax is also very much zero waste, as most part of the plant is used : flax oil, flax seed, linen etc.. it’s also incredibly biodegradable when it’s not treated and dyed.. (it’s natural colours are ivory/ecru/tan/grey) it’s actually one of the most biodegradable fabrics out there. [something I learned after buying our sheets is that it’s best to stick to linen’s natural hues if possible as it means it will have been treated less, white linen has to get bleached, and dyed linen unless dyed with natural dyes are also not as environmentally friendly, something to keep in mind, just like any other fabrics out there!]
If you care for it well it can last a lifetime! I think generally it’s better to wash it warm or cold, with a mild detergent, and it prefers soft water.. which is more difficult in London but I’m going to be using a natural softener with baking soda and white vinegar! Oh and ideally air dried too (can be dried in the dryer but it might weaken the fabric over time)
Great Sleep!
One of the reasons that attracted me to linen was its incredible eco-friendly properties, but also it’s aesthetics, I love that crinkled/messy look. It’s very Wabi-Sabi...! I love the natural, earthy feel of it.
To top it off, it’s a great fabric to sleep in (and wear!) because it has temperature regulating properties, it feels cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It can absorb up to 20% of its weight in water.. which is pretty cool and means it will keep you feeling fresh all night! It’s also hypoallergenic which makes it great for anyone with sensitive/problematic skin, it’s also moth resistant, resistant to bacteria, fungus, dust mites.. (yep, gross!) WHAT CAN’T IT DO?!
If you’re worried about the softness of linen, know that it gets softer with each wash! The quality of linen will also depend on how soft it is, a lot of linen bedding are “pre-washed” to make it extra soft.
Ok now let’s get to the good stuff! Here are the brands I have found, which all have amazing pieces for all sorts of budgets (of course price will vary on the brand/origin but also sizing.. and if you’re part of the king/super king bed crew like us then…it’s definitely more pricey!)
Dazed & Amazed
Run by a mama, this is a family-run Australian business you can see their beautiful Instagram page over here! In love with all the beautiful earthy colours, she has: this stripe set that’s hand-painted! or this terracotta set! (next time my budget stretches I’ll buy one of her beautiful sets!)
Piglet In Bed
A British owned brand, with beautiful soft colours like this Sage green set, but also gorgeous neutrals like these .
Magic Linen
This is a brand I found after much scrolling on Etsy..! They have some awesome colours, I love this pale blue one and this deep Olive set..!
Secret Linen Store
They seem to have the widest variety of colours and option in terms of sizing etc.. but their pricing is quite steep, probably for a reason, they look like very good quality! (at the time of writing 5/05/20, they seem to have 10% off most sets!) Love this blush pink set and also this beautiful pebble grey colour (our back pillows are actually from that pebble grey set!)
La Redoute*
As one of the high street brands I thought they were probably the best as their bedding comes with the OEKO-TEX® certificate - I particularly liked their natural set, but sadly they never had it in the size I needed! (they also have 40% off with the code NEW at the moment.. our beige cushion covers at the front are from them a while back)
Made*
After much deliberation, I went with a white set from made.com which I love, but sadly they sent me the wrong size… which was a blessing in disguise because we wanted to size up our duvet anyway, and they gave me some money off for the mistake, but yes.. for that alone I was hesitant to share but their customer service was great.. they offered for me to return and get money back. We’ve been sleeping in our white set for a week or so and love it! (still waiting for the bigger sized duvet to come..!)
Cultiver Goods
A brand I discovered today through insta! Wish I had seen them before, love their selection! Especially this natural set and also pinstripe set.. all about those thin stripes!!
Timeless Linen
A small family-owned business based in the Netherland, they also happen to have beautiful linen clothes for both adults and kids. I love their off-white set, they also have fitted sheets, and beautiful linen blankets!
I Love Linen
Another australian owned brand..! they have the coolest website and instagram page.. I was signed up to their emails for a while and they do kill it! Not just with bedding either.. They happen to have some of the most amazing natural earthy colours I’ve seen out there! I had to rethink because they came from so far away, but their stuff looks so good!
Another few brands I found and that look really cool… ALL happen to be Aussies.. (seriously Australia ALWAYS has the best brands!!) I love the look of Linen Social - Kate James Studios — on another note, another NON-linen brand I found while doing some searching that looked really cool is : Tekla Fabrics which is made of organic cotton which looks almost like linen?! (they do however have linen bedspreads!!)
((also you might be tempted by H&M as they have some of the cheapest linen sheets I’ve seen, but they’re made in China and we all know their ethos and eco standards are incredibly low hence why I haven’t linked them on here..))

That’s it from me! I hope this helps you narrow down your search a little bit, I would, of course, recommend going small business / family-owned if your budget allows, as you know it goes to their family directly and is better for the environment overall. But I also totally understand that when the budget doesn’t allow.. do the best option you can! (I’m happy with my Made decision..but I’m saving up for an earthy set from Dazed but Amazed! and also eyeing those Tekla Fabrics sheets also!)
PS: if you know any other family-owned more local brand please let me know and I’d love to add them to the list!
